There is a moment almost every afternoon at Havencroft when the sanctuary seems to exhale. The chores are finished, breakfast is a distant memory, and the frantic energy of the morning has dissolved into something quieter. The goats drift toward patches of sunlight. The ducks gather together for a communal nap. The alpacas climb the rise overlooking the pasture and stand motionless, gazing into the distance with an air of quiet importance. The barn cats, masters of comfort, somehow locate the warmest surface available and drape themselves over it as though gravity has simply stopped applying to them. From a human perspective, it can almost feel... unproductive. They're just standing there. Or sleeping. Or chewing hay. Surely they should be doing something.
